What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment
As part of root canal treatment, our specialists take the following steps:
- Use advanced imaging to find and confirm the source of the infection
- Numb the tooth thoroughly with strong local anesthetics
- Access and remove the infected or inflamed pulp
- Shape and disinfect the canals using specialized technology
- Fill the space with a flexible material to help prevent reinfection
- Seal the tooth with a temporary filling during healing
After about two weeks of healing, we will check the tooth and place a final restoration, such as a crown or filling, to protect the tooth long-term. You do not need to visit a different dental office for this step, so your treatment stays connected from start to finish.
Other Procedures Endodontists Perform
Beyond routine root canal treatment, our in-house endodontists also handle more complex cases, including:
- Retreatment for a tooth that was previously treated but needs care again
- Apicoectomy, a procedure to treat infection at the root tip when a standard root canal isn't enough
- Dental care after a tooth injury
- Other endodontic procedures, such as resorption treatment and internal bleaching, as needed
If you have been told you need a root canal, you may be concerned about what is involved, whether it will hurt, or how much it will cost. It's normal to have questions about root canal treatment. Our team will explain each step and discuss ways to keep you comfortable. Root canal treatment is a routine procedure that our specialists commonly perform to save a tooth by removing infected dental pulp.
