Emergency Dentistry

Dental emergencies don’t wait for a convenient time, and neither should you. If you are in pain, broke off a piece of a tooth, or have another dental emergency, Glen Burnie Dental Group is here for you. We are open Monday through Friday, and with six doctors, we will do our best to be available for your emergency needs.

Call us at (410) 969-9300, and one of our team members will work quickly to understand your situation and get you on our schedule as soon as possible.

Dental Emergencies That Should Not Wait

Some dental problems can wait for a regular appointment. Others need attention right away, including:

  • Severe or ongoing tooth pain
  • A swollen face, jaw, or gums
  • A broken, cracked, or knocked-out tooth
  • A lost filling or crown that's causing pain
  • Signs of infection, like a pimple-like bump on the gums

If you aren't sure whether your problem counts as an emergency, call us. We can help you figure out the next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes, yes. Whether we can save a tooth depends on the extent of the damage, whether there is an infection present, how much healthy tooth structure remains, and how quickly you can see us.

What Affects the Outcome

  • How much of the tooth is broken or missing
  • Whether the root or nerve is exposed
  • How long the problem has gone untreated
  • Whether infection has spread to surrounding tissue

Treatment Options to Save a Tooth

Depending on what your dentist finds, treatment may involve a filling, a crown, a root canal, or, in some cases, an extraction. Coming in sooner rather than later generally gives you more treatment options, since delayed care can sometimes limit what's possible to save.

Help for a Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is a critical dental emergency that requires immediate attention. We cannot guarantee the tooth can be saved, but proper handling and getting to our office as quickly as possible improve the odds. Handle the tooth by the crown only; do not touch the root. The root should stay moist, so place it inside your cheek pocket or in a container with milk (never water!).

If you're dealing with a dental emergency, call our Glen Burnie, MD, dental office at (410) 969-9300. We see patients from throughout Anne Arundel County, including Pasadena, Severna Park, Millersville, Odenton, Crofton, Arnold, and Annapolis.

Emergency Dental Care

With multiple dentists, we often have more room to fit you in quickly than a single-dentist office would. If your emergency turns out to be a root canal abscess or infection, our in-house endodontists can relieve your pain and may be able to begin treatment, so you don't have to visit a specialist.

What Happens at an Emergency Dental Visit?

When you come in for an emergency, our dentists will:

  • Ask about your symptoms
  • Perform a visual exam to see what’s happening
  • Take x-rays to understand the extent of the emergency
  • Explain their findings and your treatment options
  • If we cannot treat the underlying problem the same day, we’ll try to alleviate your pain and describe the next steps clearly.

Emergency Dentistry Technology

Intraoral Cameras

Intraoral Cameras

Have you ever wondered exactly what your dentist sees during an exam? An intraoral camera is a small, wand-like device that captures close-up images inside your mouth and displays them instantly on a screen right next to your chair. It's a simple tool that makes a real difference in how we communicate with you about your oral health.

During your exam, we use the intraoral camera to show you areas of concern, such as small cracks, worn fillings, or early signs of decay, in real time, rather than simply describing them. When you can see exactly what we see, it's easier to understand what is happening and why we may recommend a particular treatment. You are better equipped to ask questions and make confident, informed decisions about your care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I go to the ER or call an emergency dentist?

For severe tooth pain, a broken tooth, or a dental infection, call us first. Go to the emergency room for facial trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, since those need immediate medical attention.

Can I get antibiotics for a dental infection?

Your dentist will evaluate your infection and let you know if antibiotics are appropriate. Antibiotics alone will not resolve the underlying problem, so further treatment is often still needed.

What should I do if I knock out a tooth?

Call us right away. Keep the tooth moist and avoid touching the root. Getting to a dentist quickly gives you the best chance of saving the tooth.
