Dental Cleanings and Exams in Glen Burnie

Preventive dentistry is the ongoing care that helps you keep your teeth and gums healthy today and in the future. Prevention includes regular exams, professional cleanings, x-rays when needed, and education on caring for your teeth at home. At Glen Burnie Dental Group, we get to know your needs so that we can tailor your preventive care to your individual oral health.

 Why Regular Dental Visits Matter

Many dental problems don't cause pain until they become more serious. Cavities, gum disease, cracks, and worn or damaged fillings can develop quietly, without any pain to warn you.

Regular visits let our dentists compare what they see now to what they saw last time. That way, we can catch changes early when they are often easier to address than if you waited. Common issues include:

  • Early tooth decay
  • Changes in gum health
  • Worn or damaged fillings and crowns
  • Small cracks or areas of wear
  • Signs of teeth grinding or clenching

How often you should come in depends on your oral health, gum condition, and risk factors like history of decay or gum disease. Your dentist will recommend a schedule that fits your needs and explain how it will benefit you.

Benefits of Preventive Dental Care

The best time to visit the dentist is when you're not experiencing any dental issues. Why? Because these appointments are the best way to keep your smile healthy and possibly avoid those dental issues altogether.
Catch Problems Sooner
Seeing you regularly allows us to monitor ongoing issues and address decay, gum problems, wear, or damaged dental work right away. The sooner we identify issues, the simpler treatment can be and the more options you will have.
Care Based on Your Needs
Your oral health needs are unique, and we base your visit schedule, x-rays, and cleaning recommendations on your specific oral health, not a one-size-fits-all approach. What you need may look different from what a family member needs.
Protect Your Investment
Preventive care helps you keep your natural teeth for as long as possible. At the same time, we can keep an eye on fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, or other dental work you already have to make sure they last as long as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not always. Instead of seeing a hygienist at your first appointment at Glen Burnie Dental Group, you will see one of our dentists. Your first visit is an evaluation, and your dentist decides whether a routine cleaning is the right next step or whether something else needs attention first.

Why We Start with an Evaluation

Jumping straight into a cleaning without an exam means your dentist could miss something important. We may need to address conditions like active decay, gum disease, or infection before a standard cleaning is appropriate.

What Happens at Your First Visit

  • A conversation about your dental history and any concerns
  • An evaluation of your teeth, gums, bite, and existing dental work
  • Any necessary x-rays
  • A discussion of our findings and next steps

If a cleaning is appropriate, it may happen the same day. If your dentist finds something that needs attention first, they'll explain what it is and why they recommend treatment, so you're never left guessing.

No Judgment, Just Support

Are you overdue for a checkup and worry what your dentist will say? We understand that many people delay dental care due to either dental anxiety, worry about cost, or simply feeling embarrassed about how long it has been.

At Glen Burnie Dental Group, we start with where you are right now and explain what we find in plain language, with no lectures. If you’re anxious, we offer nitrous oxide to soothe your nerves. Worry about cost? Many dental insurance plans cover the cost of preventive care, and our team will check your plan before we begin treatment. There are no surprises, and we want you to feel confident that we always have your best interests in mind.

Preventive Dentistry Technology

Panoramic X-Rays

Panoramic X-Rays

A panoramic x-ray captures your entire mouth in a single image, including your upper and lower jaw, all your teeth, your sinuses, and the surrounding bone structure. Unlike traditional x-rays that use a small sensor placed inside your mouth, a panoramic x-ray is taken while you stand in front of a machine that gently rotates around your head. It's a quick, comfortable process that requires no biting down on anything.

This type of x-ray gives your dentist a broad view of your oral health that standard x-rays simply can't provide on their own. We use panoramic x-rays to evaluate wisdom teeth, support treatment planning for dental implants, dentures, and all-on-x restorations, and to check for issues that may not be visible in routine x-rays. One image tells us a great deal about your overall oral health in a matter of seconds.

Panoramic x-rays are also a great option for patients who have a strong gag reflex or feel uncomfortable with sensors placed inside the mouth. Young children often find them much easier to manage as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need dental x-rays at every visit?

Not necessarily. Your dentist recommends x-rays based on your oral health, history, and how long it's been since your last images. They're used when needed to see what an exam alone can't show.

How often should I schedule dental checkups?

The standard recommendation for routine exams and cleanings is every six months. After our dentists and hygienists have reviewed all your information, they will recommend the frequency that's right for you. If you have active gum disease, we may recommend more frequent visits; if you are at low risk for cavities and gum disease, we may recommend fewer visits.
